SMS Definition

SMS is short for Short Messaging Service

Short Message Service, or SMS for short is a feature on that is available with most mobile phones that allows you to send and receive short text messages.

With the technology of mobile phones constantly advancing, 99% of mobile phones can now support the sending and receiving of short text messages. A major factor in this is your network provider e.g. T-Mobile, Vadafone etc. Your network provider must have a system that can deal with the sending/receiving of short text messages.

SMS text messages get addressed to a mobile phone number. Now most modern mobile phones can now allow you to send short text messages to a e-mail address or even a electrical appliance. A new invention that will soon revolutionise the way we use our mobiles to send SMS has started; sending SMS text messages to household devices such as a cooker or microwave. You can text a short code to a special number, this will then activate your microwave to start cooking, so if you are nearly home and you want your dinner ready, you can simply text your microwave and it will cook your dinner for you.

SMS is also used for downloading mobile ringtones. If you send a SMS containing 6 numbers and a code, a server will then send you the ringtone that you selected. This is how schnozberry send you ringtones when ordered via SMS.
